Russia has announced the expulsion of a British diplomat, accusing him of espionage activities that threaten national security.
On Tuesday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) declared that Wilkes Edward Prior, a diplomat from the United Kingdom, provided false information upon entering the country. The FSB stated they found evidence suggesting Prior was involved in “intelligence and subversive work” against the Russian Federation.
This move intensifies the ongoing tensions between Moscow and London, as both nations have expelled several of each other’s diplomats over spying accusations in recent years. Earlier this year, Russia expelled six UK diplomats on similar charges.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office has yet to comment on the expulsion. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned the British ambassador for further discussions.
The incident highlights the fragile state of diplomatic relations between the two countries, with espionage allegations fueling distrust on both sides.
