Finland and China are taking their long-standing relationship to new heights with a joint action plan promoting a future-oriented cooperative partnership from 2025 to 2029. In an exclusive interview during his visit to Beijing, former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb shared his insights on the evolving ties between the two nations.

“China is a patient power,” Stubb remarked, highlighting the importance of endurance and perseverance in leadership. “Leadership is about endurance, perseverance, and grit.”

Stubb, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, noted the positive conversational chemistry between them. “Our discussions were constructive and forward-looking,” he said. “We are committed to exploring new avenues for cooperation that will benefit both our countries.”

Finland was among the first Western countries to establish diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China in 1950 and the first to sign an intergovernmental trade agreement in 1953. Building on this foundation, the new action plan aims to deepen collaboration in various fields, including trade, technology, and cultural exchanges.

“The joint action plan is a significant milestone,” Stubb explained. “It demonstrates our mutual commitment to a partnership that looks to the future while respecting our longstanding friendship.”

The future-oriented partnership between Finland and China is expected to open doors for young people in both countries, creating opportunities for educational exchanges, technological innovation, and cultural understanding.

“It’s essential for the younger generation to be involved,” Stubb emphasized. “They are the ones who will carry this partnership forward and shape the future of our global community.”
