A recent global survey reveals that developing countries are at the forefront of the fight against climate change, showcasing remarkable determination and commitment to adopting green solutions.
The survey, conducted by CGTN and Renmin University of China, polled 7,658 respondents across 38 countries. Results indicate a strong global consensus on the urgency of addressing climate change, with 90.3% of participants emphasizing the need for immediate action and international cooperation.
Rising Concerns Over Extreme Weather
An overwhelming majority of respondents expressed deep concern over the increasing frequency of extreme weather events like heatwaves, hurricanes, and floods. According to the survey:
- 90.4% believe extreme weather events have increased rapidly in recent years.
- 87.3% feel these events reflect a rapid deterioration of the global climate.
- 89.8% are “very concerned” or “concerned” about climate governance issues.
Developing Countries Show Greater Resolve
The survey highlights that individuals from developing countries demonstrate a stronger willingness to combat climate change compared to those from developed nations. Key findings include:
- 80.8% of respondents from developing nations are willing to pay extra for environmentally friendly products, 26.5 percentage points higher than respondents from developed countries.
- 86.6% actively embrace new energy technologies and products, 17 points higher than in developed nations.
- 96.1% support accelerating the development of green industries, nearly 11 percentage points higher than their developed country counterparts.
Calls for Enhanced International Cooperation
A notable 87% of global respondents believe that strengthening international cooperation is essential for effective climate governance. However, many feel that developed nations are not doing enough:
- 75.3% think developed countries lack sincerity and action in global climate governance.
- 73.9% consider it irresponsible for developed nations to delay fulfilling their climate aid commitments.
- 85.8% urge developed countries to provide crucial climate financing to support developing nations in advancing the Paris Agreement.
- 89.8% believe developed countries bear significant historical and moral responsibility for human-induced climate change and should show greater ambition and action.
The survey underscores the importance of a united global effort to address the accelerating climate crisis. With developing countries leading by example, the call for developed nations to step up their commitments is louder than ever.
