Preserving the Past: Canadian Expert Calls for Youth Engagement in Heritage Protection

Dr. Mario Santana Quintero, a leading expert in cultural heritage preservation and professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, recently discussed the pressing challenges facing heritage sites today. As a member of the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) and former Secretary General of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Dr. Santana Quintero emphasizes the crucial role of advanced digital technologies in safeguarding historical sites.

“Heritage sites are under constant threat from environmental factors, urban development, and lack of public awareness,” he explained. “Leveraging digital tools like 3D laser scanning and virtual reality can significantly enhance our ability to document and protect these invaluable resources.”

Dr. Santana Quintero also highlighted the importance of involving young people in conservation efforts. He believes that interactive methods and modern technology can foster a deeper connection and sense of responsibility among the youth toward cultural heritage.

“Engaging the next generation is essential,” he said. “By integrating technology into heritage education, we can make preservation more accessible and exciting for young people, inspiring them to become active participants in protecting our shared history.”

As honorary president of CIPA, a committee under ICOMOS and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), Dr. Santana Quintero continues to advocate for innovative approaches in heritage documentation and conservation worldwide.
