Chinese Latin American Scholars Discuss Road to Chinese Modernization

Chinese and Latin American Scholars Unite to Explore Paths to Modernization

Scholars from China and Latin America recently came together to explore new paths to modernization, focusing on collaboration and shared growth. The National High-end Think Tank of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences organized a series of lectures and reports in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, attracting nearly 1,000 participants from political, business, and academic circles.

Building Bridges Between Continents

The events aimed to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning between China and Latin America’s modern civilizations. Experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences delivered speeches on topics such as the essence of Chinese modernization, its global contributions, and inspirations for promoting economic and trade cooperation between China and Latin America.

Learning from Chinese Modernization

Latin American scholars emphasized the significant reference value of China’s modernization experience for their own countries. Enrique Dussel Peters, Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, shared his observations on China’s remarkable achievements over the past decade. He noted how China’s rapid economic development and social stability offer valuable lessons for Latin America.

Oscar Parrilli, Executive Chairman of the Argentine Institute of the Fatherland, highlighted the global attention drawn by China’s modernization efforts and ideas. He expressed keen interest in understanding how these concepts could be applied to foster growth and development in Latin American nations.

Toward a Shared Future

Participants agreed that modernization is a common pursuit around the world. China’s focus on coordinated development—covering economic, political, cultural, social, and ecological aspects—resonated with Latin American aspirations. China’s success in eliminating absolute poverty was particularly lauded, providing “Chinese wisdom” for tackling global challenges.

Gulnar Azevedo e Silva, President of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, praised the far-reaching impact of Chinese modernization on Latin America. She expressed a strong desire to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two regions, believing that China’s experience holds important insights for Latin American countries.

Strengthening Global South Cooperation

The gathering underscored the importance of think tank exchanges and cooperation between countries in the Global South. By working together, nations like China and those in Latin America can guide each other toward modernization and contribute to building a better world. Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner emphasized the need to deepen the friendship between China and Latin America, forming synergy in their common pursuit of modernization.

The series of lectures was a collaborative effort among several prestigious institutions, including the University of Buenos Aires, the State University of Rio de Janeiro, the State University of São Paulo, and the China-Mexico Research Center of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In addition to the lectures, experts also held symposiums on various topics such as economic and trade relations and the modernization of the rule of law.
