Over 15,000 Affected as Heavy Rains Lash Sri Lanka

Over 15,000 people across Sri Lanka are reeling from the effects of heavy rains and flooding, according to the country’s Disaster Management Center (DMC). Torrential downpours have caused floods, strong winds, and falling trees, affecting 4,307 families in seven districts.

The Northern Province’s Jaffna district is the hardest hit, with over 7,000 people affected. The DMC reports significant challenges in Northern, North Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces.

“We haven’t seen rains like this in years,” said a local resident. “Our homes are flooded, and we are worried about the coming days.”

The Department of Irrigation has warned of possible floods between November 25 and 28 in 12 flood-prone river basin areas. The current low-pressure situation in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify, leading to further heavy rainfall.

Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are likely in Northern, North Central, Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district. The Department of Meteorology notes that Sri Lanka typically receives nearly 30% of its annual rainfall during October and November.

Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions. Relief efforts are underway to support affected families.
