Samoan PM Seeks China’s Help in Tackling Climate Change and Modernization

Samoan Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa is looking to China for assistance in modernizing her nation through technological innovation. During her recent nine-day visit to China from November 20 to 28, Mata’afa emphasized the pressing development challenges faced by Pacific island nations, particularly the impacts of climate change.

In an exclusive interview in Beijing, Mata’afa highlighted the need to change agricultural practices and protect the ecosystem in Samoa. She believes that China’s experience and high-tech capabilities can provide targeted solutions to these issues.

“China’s people-centered approach to government and technological prowess are commendable,” Mata’afa stated. She also sees potential in China providing a market for some of Samoa’s products, fostering economic growth for her country.

Mata’afa expressed optimism about China’s global initiatives, noting that they “address challenges and create opportunities.” By learning from China’s development path, she hopes Samoa can navigate its own modernization journey while mitigating the effects of climate change.
