Five people lost their lives on Monday after a perimeter wall collapsed during heavy rains in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa, local officials confirmed. The tragic incident occurred as torrential downpours battered the region, causing widespread devastation.
The accident came just two days after the government issued flood warnings due to intense rainfall affecting several parts of the country. The ongoing deluge has left hundreds homeless, with rivers in western Kenya bursting their banks and flooding nearby communities.
The Kenya Meteorological Department reported that the short rainy season, which began in October, is expected to continue until later this month. Above-average rainfall is forecast for many areas, increasing the risk of further flooding.
Earlier this year, Kenya faced unprecedented rainfall intensified by the El Niño weather pattern. Between March and June, heavy rains and flooding claimed over 300 lives, injured 188, and left 38 missing. Nearly 300,000 people were displaced, according to the Kenya National Disaster Operation Center.
As Kenya grapples with the effects of climate change, authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines. The repeated extreme weather events highlight the urgent need for sustainable solutions to protect vulnerable communities.
