Russia Says Assad Has Left Country and Ordered Peaceful Power Handover

Russia Announces Assad Resigned: Syrian President Leaves Country, Orders Peaceful Transition

In a surprising turn of events, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has resigned and left the country, ordering a peaceful transfer of power.

“As a result of negotiations between Bashar al-Assad and several participants in the armed conflict within the Syrian Arab Republic, he decided to step down from the presidency and has departed the country, giving instructions for a peaceful transition,” said the ministry in a statement.

The ministry did not disclose Assad’s current whereabouts and emphasized that Russia was not involved in the negotiations leading to his departure. “Russia did not participate in these negotiations,” the statement clarified.

Moscow expressed deep concern over the developments in Syria and called on all parties to refrain from violence. “We urge all parties involved to refrain from the use of violence and to resolve all issues of governance through political means,” the ministry urged. “In that regard, the Russian Federation is in contact with all groups of the Syrian opposition.”

Meanwhile, Russia’s military bases in Syria have been placed on high alert, though the ministry indicated there is no significant threat to them at this time.

The sudden resignation of Assad marks a pivotal moment in Syria’s ongoing conflict, raising questions about the future leadership of the country and the prospects for peace after years of turmoil.
