Preserving History: Gulbakram’s Devotion to Jiaohe’s Ancient Ruins

Growing up amidst the timeless ruins of Jiaohe, an ancient city in Turpan, northwest China, Gulbakram Mumin always felt a deep connection to her heritage. The whispers of the old city walls and the tales of bygone eras were part of her daily life. Inspired by her father and grandfather, both dedicated guardians of these relics, Gulbakram pursued studies in history and heritage protection at university.

Now, returning to her hometown, she carries forward her family’s legacy as a cultural relics guardian at Jiaohe. “It’s more than a job; it’s a calling,” she says with a smile. Each day, she walks among the relics, ensuring their preservation and sharing the ancient city’s secrets with visitors young and old.

“I want people to feel the history here, to understand the stories these ruins tell,” Gulbakram shares. She organizes guided tours, educational programs, and community events, all aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for the site. Her efforts not only protect the physical remnants but also breathe life into the narratives of the past.

The Jiaohe ruins, dating back over 2,000 years, are a testament to the region’s rich cultural tapestry. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, its preservation is crucial. Gulbakram’s dedication ensures that future generations can continue to explore and learn from this ancient marvel.

For Gulbakram, the most rewarding aspect is seeing young people’s eyes light up with curiosity. “When they ask questions and show interest, I know I’m making a difference,” she reflects. Her journey exemplifies how one person’s passion can bridge the past and the present, inspiring others to cherish and protect their heritage.
