Beijing is set to become even greener! The city’s authorities have announced ambitious plans to increase the forest coverage rate to 45% by 2025. This initiative is part of Beijing’s vision to become a world-class, harmonious, and livable metropolis.
According to the Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau, the city will add 200 hectares of parkland and construct an additional 1,000 kilometers of greenways. Lin Jinwen, the deputy director of the bureau, highlighted these developments as key steps toward enhancing the city’s environmental landscape.
Over the past decade, Beijing has made significant strides in expanding its green spaces. The forest coverage rate has risen from 38.6% in 2012 to a notable 44.9% today. Urban afforestation coverage has reached 49.8%, and the city now boasts 1,065 parks. Residents enjoy an average of 16.9 square meters of green space per person.
“The city will be built into a garden city nestled in forests,” Lin noted, emphasizing the commitment to environmental sustainability and improving the quality of life for Beijing’s inhabitants.
