Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the nation to stay united and maintain strategic resolve in the journey toward building a stronger China by 2025.
Speaking at a gathering of China’s top political advisory body to usher in the new year, Xi emphasized the importance of facing challenges head-on. “On the journey of Chinese modernization, we will not only encounter clear skies and gentle breezes but also face high winds, choppy waters, and even dangerous storms,” he said. “We must maintain strategic resolve and pool the great strength of all Chinese people striving in unity to cut through the waves and forge ahead with courage.”
Reflecting on the achievements of 2024, Xi noted that China had responded calmly to domestic and international challenges, meeting major economic and social development targets for the year. “The development journey in 2024 has been extraordinary with encouraging achievements, which has further strengthened the country’s determination and confidence in advancing Chinese modernization,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2025, the final year of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), Xi called for the implementation of more proactive macro policies to promote sustained economic recovery, improve people’s living standards, and maintain social harmony and stability. He stressed the high-quality fulfillment of the goals and tasks of the current plan to lay a solid foundation for a good start to the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan.
Xi also praised the contributions of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) over the past year, encouraging it to fully leverage its role as a specialized consultative body. He called on the CPPCC to actively offer suggestions, garner public support, and foster common understanding.
The gathering was presided over by Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Other senior leaders, including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi, and Han Zheng, attended the event.
