BEIJING, China (January 1, 2025) — Thousands of people gathered in the pre-dawn hours at Beijing’s iconic Tiananmen Square to witness the first flag-raising ceremony of the New Year. As the first rays of sunlight pierced the morning sky, the Chinese national flag ascended, marking the arrival of 2025.
The annual tradition drew crowds from across the country, with many arriving the night before to secure a prime viewing spot for the momentous occasion. Families, students, and tourists braved the chilly winter air, wrapped in scarves and holding flags, united in anticipation.
“Being here to welcome the New Year with everyone is truly special,” said Li Wei, a university student who traveled from Shanghai. “The atmosphere is incredible, and it’s an honor to see the flag rise over Tiananmen Square.”
The brief but solemn ceremony was conducted by the honor guard of the People’s Liberation Army, who marched in precise formation before raising the flag to the stirring notes of the national anthem, “March of the Volunteers.”
Tiananmen Square, one of the world’s largest public squares, has been the site of the national flag-raising ceremony since 1949. The event symbolizes unity and hope for the year ahead, reflecting the nation’s aspirations.
“This is my first time attending,” shared Zhang Mei, who brought her young son to experience the tradition. “I wanted him to feel the pride and joy of this moment. It’s a memory we’ll cherish.”
As daylight spread over the city, the crowd dispersed, many heading to celebrate the rest of the holiday with family and friends, carrying with them the spirit of renewal that the New Year brings.
