China has pledged to support Namibia’s drive toward modernization, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced on Monday. Speaking in Swakopmund during his meeting with Namibia’s President Nangolo Mbumba, Wang emphasized China’s commitment to strengthening ties with Namibia and promoting the implementation of the 10 partnership actions proposed at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
“China has always been Africa’s trustworthy friend,” Wang said. “We are ready to work closely with Namibia to accelerate its modernization and achieve common development.”
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, is on a week-long tour of four African nations, including Namibia, the Republic of the Congo, Chad, and Nigeria. He highlighted China’s tradition of foreign ministers beginning their overseas visits with trips to Africa, underlining the importance of the continent in China’s foreign policy.
President Mbumba expressed appreciation for China’s continued support. “Namibia firmly adheres to the one-China policy and is willing to enhance inter-party cooperation with China,” he said. Recalling his visit to China for the FOCAC Beijing Summit last year, Mbumba stated that Namibia is eager to implement the outcomes of the summit actively.
“We are ready to take practical measures to expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, digital economy, energy, agriculture, and education to enhance the well-being of our peoples,” Mbumba added.
On the same day, Wang Yi also met with Namibia’s president-elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, further strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
