A magnitude-5.5 earthquake struck Maduo County in northwest China’s Qinghai Province on Wednesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The quake occurred at 10:21 a.m. local time at a depth of 14 kilometers. Residents reported feeling tremors, but there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage.
Local authorities have initiated emergency response protocols, dispatching teams to assess the impact and assist residents. The region, known for its high-altitude plateaus and rugged terrain, is situated within a seismic zone due to tectonic activity along the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in Qinghai Province. In recent years, the province has experienced several moderate quakes, underscoring the importance of preparedness and swift response by local communities and officials.
The CENC continues to monitor seismic activity in the area. Residents are advised to stay alert for aftershocks and follow instructions from local authorities.
