Resettlement efforts are well underway after a powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in Xizang Autonomous Region, southwest China, on Tuesday morning.
As of 6 a.m. Thursday, the quake has affected over 61,500 people. Authorities have established 224 resettlement sites, providing shelter and basic necessities for 47,500 relocated residents, according to a press conference held on Thursday.
With temperatures dropping below minus 10 degrees Celsius, officials have focused on distributing winter relief items. So far, 12,730 tents have been set up, 1,572 stoves installed, and 3,020 electric blankets distributed. Additionally, 104 trucks carrying fuel have been sent to the affected area.
“The supply of disaster relief materials is generally adequate, and the living needs of the residents are basically ensured,” said Hao Tao, deputy head of the regional emergency management department. “Local residents can now have hot meals, clean drinking water, and timely medical treatment.”
