In the city of Yuncheng, Shanxi Province, artisan Jiang Sha is bringing vibrant color and festive joy to local markets as the Spring Festival approaches. Using traditional techniques passed down through generations, Jiang crafts intricate steamed dough figurines, known as “huamo” in Chinese.
Made from white flour and tinted with natural dyes extracted from fresh fruits and vegetables, her creations are both visually stunning and rich in cultural symbolism. The figurines feature playful representations of the Chinese zodiac animals, the character “fu” meaning blessing, and festive motifs like the lion dance, each symbolizing good fortune and prosperity.
“Huamo has been a cherished part of our heritage for centuries,” Jiang shares. “I hope to keep this tradition alive and share its joy with everyone during the Spring Festival.”
Her handcrafted huamo are in high demand, adding a touch of tradition and festivity to the holiday markets. As the Year of the Snake approaches, Jiang’s colorful creations continue to enchant both young and old, embodying the spirit of the season.
