As the Chinese New Year approaches, the Dong people of Yuping Dong Autonomous County are bustling with preparations, keeping their rich culinary traditions alive. Among the festive delicacies being made, hongba—a vibrant red glutinous rice cake—holds a special place in their celebrations.
Hongba is cherished not only for its unique hue associated with joy and good fortune but also for its significance in bringing communities together. The process of making hongba is a meticulous craft passed down through generations. Villagers mix two varieties of glutinous rice in precise proportions, grinding them into a fine flour. The mixture is then wrapped in dyed glutinous rice before being steamed to perfection.
"Making hongba is no easy task," says a villager from Baiguo Village. "It requires patience and skill, but it’s a tradition that connects us to our heritage."
Beyond the Chinese New Year, hongba features prominently in other joyous occasions in Yuping, such as weddings, milestone birthdays, and housewarming ceremonies. Its presence symbolizes happiness and prosperity, making it an indispensable part of local festivities.
Through these enduring customs, the Dong people continue to celebrate their culture, sharing the spirit of the season with each other and ensuring that their heritage thrives for future generations.
