The “Legend of the White Snake,” one of China’s most cherished folk tales, has been brought to life in a stunning performance by the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe. Blending romance, tragedy, and supernatural intrigue, the timeless story captivated audiences with its portrayal of love that defies boundaries.
At the heart of the tale is Bai Suzhen, a white snake spirit who transforms into a beautiful woman. She falls deeply in love with a mortal man, Xu Xian, and the two marry despite the chasm between their worlds. Their love, however, draws the ire of Fa Hai, a powerful monk who believes such a union defies the natural order.
In the climactic “Battle in the Water” scene, Bai Suzhen and her loyal sister Xiaoqing, the green snake spirit, confront Fa Hai at the Jinshan Temple where Xu Xian is imprisoned. The sisters unleash their extraordinary powers in a desperate attempt to rescue him. Despite their might, they are ultimately overwhelmed by Fa Hai’s spiritual authority, leading to a heartrending conclusion.
The actors of the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe delivered a mesmerizing performance, breathing new life into this age-old legend. Their portrayal of the characters and the dramatic retelling of the “Battle in the Water” left the audience in awe, reaffirming the enduring appeal of this beloved story.
