In the lush hills of Guilin, south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, lies Nanxishan Hospital—a silent witness to a profound story of compassion and solidarity. During the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War, this modest hospital became a sanctuary for thousands of Vietnamese patients seeking urgent medical care.
Over eight years, Nanxishan Hospital opened its doors to 5,324 Vietnamese patients who arrived in 119 groups, fleeing the ravages of one of the 20th century’s fiercest conflicts. Despite facing limited resources and immense challenges, the dedicated staff performed 2,576 surgical procedures, working tirelessly to save lives and alleviate suffering.
The hospital’s medical teams embodied the spirit of humanitarianism and socialist fraternal unity, forging a bond between China and Vietnam that transcended borders. Their relentless efforts not only healed bodies but also bridged cultures, leaving an indelible mark on the history of both nations.
Today, Nanxishan Hospital stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between China and Vietnam—a hidden chapter reminding us of the power of compassion and the impact of reaching out to those in need.
