China and the Philippines have taken a significant step towards easing tensions in the South China Sea. On Thursday, they held their 10th Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) meeting in Xiamen, located in southeast China’s Fujian Province.
During the meeting, both nations engaged in open and constructive discussions about the situation in the South China Sea. They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, noting that this benefits all countries involved, including China and the Philippines.
The two sides agreed to strengthen maritime dialogue and communication. They highlighted the need to properly handle any differences or disagreements through dialogue and consultation. China urged the Philippines to adhere to existing agreements, such as the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.
Furthermore, both countries committed to promoting practical maritime cooperation. This includes collaboration between their coast guards, advancements in marine science and technology, environmental protection efforts, and more.
The meeting was co-chaired by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong and Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines. Their leadership underscores the high-level commitment to fostering better relations and cooperation in the region.
