China has announced an ambitious plan to revolutionize its education system by 2035, aiming to become a global leader in education and support its modernization efforts.
The 2024-2035 master plan, jointly released by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council on Sunday, outlines a roadmap to build a strong education system rooted in socialism with Chinese characteristics.
The blueprint emphasizes key features such as powerful ideological and political leadership, talent competitiveness, scientific and technological support, livelihood security, social synergy, and international influence.
Milestones Ahead
By 2027, China aims to establish a high-quality education system, significantly improving its ability to nurture independent talent. This initiative is expected to produce a steady stream of outstanding and innovative individuals.
Looking ahead to 2035, the plan envisions a fully established high-quality education system. The accessibility and quality of basic education are projected to rank among the best in the world, contributing to the development of a well-rounded learning society and achieving overall educational modernization.
Focus on Higher Education
The master plan places a strong emphasis on enhancing higher education. China will accelerate the development of advanced research universities and encourage renowned foreign universities specializing in science and engineering to offer programs within the country.
Adjustments to academic disciplines and majors will align with advancements in science and technology as well as national strategic needs. The plan calls for extraordinary efforts to establish disciplines and majors that are urgently needed, strengthen foundational, emerging, and interdisciplinary fields, and support endangered and less popular areas of study.
An environment that encourages exploration and tolerates failure is also a priority, aiming to cultivate high-caliber faculty and master scholars.
Opening Up and Global Collaboration
China’s blueprint highlights a commitment to opening up and enhancing its capacity to train and attract global talent. The country plans to expand youth exchanges with other nations and implement international summer school programs.
Academic exchanges and educational research cooperation will be expanded, with Chinese universities encouraged to initiate and participate in international scientific programs. This includes active participation in global education governance and support for establishing international STEM education institutions.
Embracing the Future
The plan also addresses the need to monitor demographic shifts in school-age populations, advance high-quality and balanced development in compulsory education, and cultivate more master craftsmen and highly skilled workers.
By unveiling this comprehensive blueprint, China is taking significant strides toward realizing its vision of becoming a leading global education powerhouse by 2035, fostering innovation and modernization for years to come.
