The per capita disposable income of rural residents in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region saw the fastest growth in the country in 2024, edging closer to the national average. This remarkable achievement comes despite the region’s challenging high-altitude conditions.
According to Li Jianshu, deputy head of the Xizang survey team at the National Bureau of Statistics, rural residents in Xizang saw their per capita disposable income reach 21,578 yuan (about $3,010) in 2024. This figure represents 93.3 percent of the national average and marks an 8.3 percent increase from the previous year—1.7 percentage points higher than the national average growth rate.
Urban residents in the region also experienced significant growth, with per capita disposable income rising to 55,444 yuan, up 6.8 percent—2.2 percentage points higher than the national average growth rate. Overall, the per capita disposable income for all residents surged by 8.2 percent to 31,358 yuan, the highest growth rate among the country’s provincial-level areas.
Once a poverty-stricken area due to its high altitude, harsh environment, and limited resources, Xizang has made tremendous strides in recent years. By the end of 2019, the region had eradicated absolute poverty, lifting 628,000 people out of impoverished conditions.
The enhanced income levels are attributed to infrastructure development, a booming tourism market, and accelerated growth across various industries. These advancements have significantly improved the income structure and living standards for the people of Xizang.
