China is calling on Thailand and Myanmar to intensify their efforts against cross-border telecom fraud in their border regions. This appeal comes after a series of fraudulent activities have threatened the safety and interests of citizens from China and other nations.
On Wednesday, Liu Jinsong, Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, met separately with Thai Ambassador to China Chatchai Viriyavejakul and Ambassador of Myanmar to China Tin Maung Swe. During these meetings, Liu expressed deep concern over the recent spike in telecom fraud cases along the Thailand-Myanmar border.
“We hope that Thailand and Myanmar will take vigorous measures to combat these offenses and ensure that criminals are brought to justice,” Liu stated. “The safety of people’s lives and property must be safeguarded without compromise.”
Liu emphasized China’s willingness to enhance bilateral and multilateral law enforcement cooperation with member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “Our goal is to create a secure environment for people’s exchanges and maintain good order in interactions among neighboring countries, including normal tourism and cultural activities,” he added.
The ambassadors from Thailand and Myanmar expressed their governments’ commitment to addressing China’s concerns. They acknowledged the serious threat posed by telecom fraud and pledged to take comprehensive measures to combat these crimes.
“We are deeply saddened by these incidents,” said Ambassador Viriyavejakul. “Our government is committed to rescuing those affected, imposing severe penalties on criminal gangs, strengthening border control, and establishing long-term mechanisms to eradicate cross-border crimes.”
Ambassador Tin Maung Swe echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Myanmar’s dedication to international cooperation in this effort. “We will not allow these criminals to go unpunished,” he affirmed.
Telecom fraud has become a significant issue in the border areas of Thailand and Myanmar, involving schemes that deceive individuals into providing personal information or transferring money. Victims often suffer financial losses and emotional distress.
This joint effort signifies a strengthening of regional cooperation to combat crime and protect citizens. By working together, China, Thailand, and Myanmar aim to ensure the safety and well-being of people throughout the region.
