Jinan City in Shandong Province has burst into color as vibrant lanterns light up its parks and commercial blocks, marking the traditional “Xiaonian” festival. Celebrated on the 23rd or 24th day of the last month in the traditional Chinese calendar, Xiaonian heralds the beginning of the Spring Festival festivities.
Residents and visitors are flocking to the illuminated displays, where lanterns of all shapes and sizes adorn the cityscape. The dazzling lights not only brighten the winter nights but also infuse the city with a festive atmosphere, bringing communities together in anticipation of the Lunar New Year.
“The lanterns are so beautiful and really get everyone in the mood for the upcoming celebrations,” said Li Wei, a local university student. “It’s a tradition that we all look forward to every year.”
Across China, various activities are held to celebrate Xiaonian, a time when families begin thorough cleaning of their homes, make offerings to the Kitchen God, and start preparing for the most important festival of the year. In Jinan, the lantern displays have become a highlight, drawing crowds and promoting cultural heritage.
The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is a time of reunion and renewal. The colorful lanterns symbolize hope and good fortune for the year ahead, reflecting the enduring traditions that continue to thrive in modern times.
