Kazakhstan’s Abzal Azhgaliyev is no stranger to the icy thrill of short track speed skating. As a three-time Winter Olympian and two-time Olympic flag bearer for his country, Azhgaliyev has carved out a legacy on the ice that inspires many.

In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Shen Xiang, the celebrated skater opened up about his journey into the sport, his memorable Olympic experiences, and his ambitions for the future.

Being chosen as Kazakhstan’s flag bearer in two Olympic Games is an honor Azhgaliyev cherishes deeply. “It’s a moment of immense pride,” he said. “Walking ahead of my country’s athletes, feeling the weight of the flag and the hopes of my people—it’s indescribable.” These experiences have not only elevated his status as an athlete but have also motivated him to strive for excellence.

Looking ahead, Azhgaliyev is setting his sights on the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin. His goals are clear: to push his limits and bring glory to Kazakhstan. “Every competition is a new challenge,” he remarked. “I aim to improve my performance and inspire the next generation of skaters.”
