China and Latin America: A Booming Trade That’s Changing the Game
Trade between China and Latin America is on fire! Over the past few years, these two regions have been building stronger connections, leading to a surge in business that’s benefiting people on both sides of the globe.
It all started 20 years ago when China signed its first free trade agreement (FTA) with a Latin American country. Fast forward to today, and China has FTAs with several countries in the region, including Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. These agreements have made it easier for goods to flow between countries, boosting economies and bringing new products to markets.
For example, since China and Chile signed their FTA in 2006, trade between them has skyrocketed, increasing multiple times over. Chilean cherries have become a hit in China, and Chinese smartphones are popular in Chile. It’s a win-win!
Peru is another success story. After their FTA came into effect in 2010, trade between China and Peru grew significantly. Peruvian blueberries and avocados are now enjoyed by Chinese consumers, while Peruvian markets are filled with affordable Chinese electronics and toys.
Even newcomers like Nicaragua are seeing big gains. Their FTA with China was signed recently, and trade is expected to grow rapidly. Nicaraguan sugar and seafood are starting to make their way to China, and Nicaraguan shoppers are gaining access to cost-effective Chinese products like motorcycles and phones.
But it doesn’t stop there! China is working on more agreements with countries like Honduras and El Salvador. Plus, with China opening up its markets even more, Latin American countries have a lot to look forward to.

They mean new job opportunities, access to diverse products, and stronger relationships between nations.
