Beijing — China has strongly opposed recent statements by the G7, accusing the group of interfering in its internal affairs and smearing its image. The Chinese Embassy in Canada announced on Saturday that it has lodged serious protests with the Canadian side over the allegations.
The G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting recently released statements on maritime security and prosperity that China claims “grossly interfered” in its domestic matters. A spokesperson for the embassy stated that China firmly safeguards its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, and resolutely opposes the G7’s actions that harm China’s sovereignty.
On the issue of Taiwan, the spokesperson reiterated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. “The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of China, which brooks no external interference,” the spokesperson said. They emphasized that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait depend on adherence to the one-China principle and opposition to Taiwan secessionists.
The spokesperson also highlighted that the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea is generally stable, describing the South China Sea as one of the world’s safest and freest maritime passages. They urged the G7 to respect regional efforts for peace and stability, abandon a Cold War mentality, and stop fueling tensions.
Addressing the Ukraine crisis, the spokesperson stated that China is not a creator of or a party to the conflict and has never provided weapons to any involved parties. They accused the G7 of “pouring fuel on the fire” and said the group has no right to scapegoat China.
Regarding nuclear policies, the spokesperson noted that China follows a policy of “no first use” of nuclear weapons and maintains its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level required for national security. They criticized the G7 for attacking other countries’ nuclear policies while undermining international nuclear disarmament efforts.
“Suppressing and attacking China is not a ‘panacea’ for resolving the G7’s internal disagreements,” the spokesperson concluded.
