In the wake of escalating U.S. tariffs and rising geopolitical tensions, South Korean businesses are turning to the Chinese mainland to bolster their supply chains and tap into new market potentials. The ongoing 25 percent tariffs imposed by the United States on imported cars and auto parts have disrupted global trade dynamics, pushing South Korea to seek alternative partnerships.

At the Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing, a major platform for international tech collaboration, South Korean experts are actively exploring joint ventures in the field of humanoid robotics. This sector is experiencing rapid growth, with the Chinese mainland leading in both innovation and large-scale manufacturing.

Kim Jong-moon, Representative of the Korea Innovation Center in China, shared his insights on the evolving landscape. “The recent tariffs have made it imperative for South Korean companies to diversify their partnerships. Collaborating with the Chinese mainland offers us resilience in our supply chains and access to cutting-edge technologies,” he said.

Humanoid robotics, in particular, has emerged as a promising area for cooperation. “The Chinese mainland’s advancements in robotics provide an excellent opportunity for mutual growth,” Kim added. “By combining South Korea’s expertise with China’s manufacturing capabilities, we can drive innovation and stay competitive on the global stage.”

The strengthened ties between South Korea and the Chinese mainland could serve as a strategic response to the shifting trade policies. By deepening technological partnerships, both regions aim to mitigate the impact of external economic pressures and foster sustainable growth.

For many young entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts in the Global South, this collaboration signals a shift towards greater regional cooperation. It highlights the importance of adaptability and the pursuit of new opportunities amid global uncertainties.
