China has called on all parties involved in CK Hutchison Holdings Limited’s ports deal to act prudently and maintain open communication with Chinese authorities. Speaking at a regular press briefing on Monday, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized the importance of following legal procedures and avoiding actions that might bypass regulatory reviews.
“We have noted relevant reports,” Guo said, referring to a recent Wall Street Journal article suggesting that the Chinese government has indicated to CK Hutchison that the sale of ports, except for the one at the Panama Canal, should not pose issues.
The State Administration for Market Regulation has expressed serious concern over the deal and plans to conduct a thorough review in accordance with the law, Guo explained. “All parties involved must avoid any measures aimed at evading the review,” he warned. “No concentration of undertakings may proceed without approval; otherwise, legal liability will be incurred.”
Guo reiterated China’s stance against economic coercion and stressed the importance of respecting the legitimate rights and interests of all countries. “China has always firmly opposed the use of economic coercion and bullying,” he stated.
He also highlighted China’s commitment to reform and opening up, welcoming foreign enterprises to invest in the country. “We hope that all parties will act prudently and communicate fully with the relevant Chinese departments,” Guo said.
