Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi welcomed his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, to Beijing on Monday for a pivotal meeting aimed at reinforcing the longstanding friendship between the two nations.

During their discussions, Wang Yi emphasized the profound ties that have connected China and Cuba for the past 65 years. “Despite the geographical distance, our countries have remained trusted partners and strong supporters of one another,” he remarked. “We serve as a model for socialist countries and the Global South.”

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to bolstering bilateral relations, supporting Cuba’s sovereignty, and opposing sanctions that have impacted the Caribbean nation. “China stands ready to build a China-Cuba community with a shared future,” Wang Yi asserted.

Bruno Rodriguez expressed gratitude for China’s unwavering support during Cuba’s economic challenges. “The strategic relationship between Cuba and China is of immense importance,” he stated. “We thank China for its steadfast assistance and opposition to sanctions against us.”

He also underscored Cuba’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and pledged to work closely with China to implement the outcomes of the recent presidential meeting.

The meeting comes ahead of the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, set to take place in Beijing on Tuesday. Both leaders expressed confidence in the success of the forum, highlighting the importance of collaboration among Latin American and Caribbean states with China.
