China Calls on India Pakistan to Consolidate Ceasefire Momentum

China Urges India and Pakistan to Strengthen Ceasefire Efforts

China has expressed strong support for the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to consolidate and extend the momentum to foster lasting peace in the region.

During a daily press briefing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian welcomed the ceasefire agreement announced by India and Pakistan on May 10. The two countries are set to hold further talks on May 12.

“The ceasefire between India and Pakistan aligns with the fundamental and long-term interests of both sides and contributes to regional peace and stability,” Lin said. “This is also the common expectation of the international community.”

Lin highlighted that China, as a neighbor to both India and Pakistan, has maintained close communication with all relevant parties since tensions escalated. “We have consistently called on both countries to remain calm and exercise restraint, avoiding any actions that could escalate the situation,” he added.

On May 10, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held phone conversations with Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The discussions aimed to promote the easing of tensions and support the achievement of a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire.

“China expects India and Pakistan to consolidate and extend the ceasefire momentum, prevent the recurrence of conflicts, and properly handle differences through dialogue and negotiation,” Lin stated. “We hope both nations can return to the path of political settlement.”

Lin affirmed China’s willingness to continue communication with India and Pakistan and to play a constructive role in achieving enduring peace between the two countries. “Maintaining regional peace and stability is in the best interest of all parties involved,” he concluded.
