Gaza City, Gaza Strip – In a surge of overnight violence, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 58 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to local health authorities on Saturday. This marks one of the deadliest phases since hostilities intensified earlier this month.
Since Thursday, more than 300 Gazans have lost their lives due to Israeli attacks, as reported by medical officials in Gaza. The latest strikes come amid heightened tensions and following the departure of a diplomatic mission aimed at brokering peace.
“Since midnight, we have received 58 martyrs, while a large number of victims remain under the rubble. The situation inside the hospital is catastrophic,” said Marwan Al-Sultan, director of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza.
Israel’s military announced on Saturday that it is conducting extensive operations and mobilizing troops in preparation for an expanded offensive in the Gaza Strip. The aim is to achieve “operational control” in key areas of the enclave.
The military buildup, including armored units along the border, is part of what Israel refers to as “Operation Gideon’s Wagons.” The stated objectives are to neutralize Hamas and secure the return of hostages taken during the group’s surprise attack on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the abduction of approximately 250 individuals.
International Concern Over Humanitarian Crisis
The United Nations has raised alarms over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher warned the Security Council about the looming threat of famine after aid deliveries were blocked for over two months.
“We are on the brink of a catastrophe. The world must act now to prevent a humanitarian disaster,” Fletcher urged.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who concluded a Middle East visit on Friday, acknowledged the growing hunger crisis in Gaza and emphasized the need for aid deliveries. The international community is increasing pressure on Israel to resume ceasefire talks and lift the blockade to allow essential supplies into the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated earlier this month plans for an expanded offensive against Hamas. The security cabinet has approved strategies that could involve seizing larger portions of the Gaza Strip and controlling aid distribution channels.

The intensified military actions have devastated the densely populated enclave, displacing vast numbers of residents. Gaza’s health authorities report that more than 53,000 people have been killed since the conflict escalated, a figure that underscores the dire need for international intervention.
