Sichuan University Museum is redefining how culture is experienced and passed on to the next generation. On this International Museum Day, the museum opened its doors for a unique hands-on workshop titled “Intangible Heritage Crafts in Action.”
Young participants eagerly rolled up their sleeves to try their hand at lacquerware making, an ancient craft deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. Under the guidance of master artisans, they delved into the intricate techniques that have been preserved through centuries.
“It’s amazing to actually create something with my own hands,” said Li Ming, a high school student attending the workshop. “I feel connected to the history and culture of my country in a whole new way.”
The museum’s innovative approach blends STEAM education—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—with cultural heritage. By integrating scientific concepts with traditional arts, the program aims to spark creativity and curiosity among the youth.
“We want to make heritage accessible and engaging,” explained Zhang Wei, an educator at the museum. “By combining hands-on activities with educational content, we create a dynamic learning environment that resonates with young people.”
The initiative not only fosters a deeper appreciation for cultural traditions but also encourages participants to explore their own identities within the rich tapestry of Chinese history. The museum transforms from a static display of artifacts into a vibrant space of interaction and discovery.
As the lacquerware pieces began to take shape, the excitement in the room was palpable. For many, it was more than just an art project—it was a journey into the past, bringing ancient craftsmanship to life.
“This experience has inspired me to learn more about our heritage,” shared Lin Jia, another participant. “I can’t wait to tell my friends about it.”
Sichuan University Museum’s efforts exemplify how educational institutions can bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, inspiring the next generation to carry forward the legacy of their culture.
