Chinese Tech Firm Targeted in Overseas Cyberattack

Guangzhou, China — A leading science and technology company in Guangzhou, the bustling capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyberattack believed to originate from an overseas hacker organization, local police reported on Tuesday.

The company’s backend system, specifically its self-service equipment, was infiltrated with malicious code, disrupting operations and raising concerns about cybersecurity threats facing businesses in the region. Upon receiving the alert from the tech firm, Guangzhou police swiftly initiated an investigation.

“Our cybercrime unit collected relevant samples and secured electronic evidence in accordance with the law,” a spokesperson for the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau stated. “Technical analysis of the attack methods and malicious code samples indicates that the intrusion was carried out by an overseas hacker group.”

The incident underscores the increasing challenges posed by international cybercriminals targeting Chinese companies. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the company affected or detailed the specific nature of the malicious code due to the ongoing investigation.

Experts suggest that such attacks aim to steal sensitive data, disrupt services, or install ransomware. “Cybersecurity is a global issue, and organizations must strengthen their defenses,” noted Li Wei, a Guangzhou-based cybersecurity analyst. “Collaboration between companies and law enforcement is crucial to combat these threats.”
