Dprk Launches Full Probe into Destroyer Launch Accident

DPRK Probes Destroyer Launch Mishap at Chongjin Shipyard

An investigation team from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has launched a full-scale probe into a significant accident involving a destroyer at the Chongjin Shipyard. The incident occurred on Wednesday, and the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the development on Friday.

The investigation group includes officials from the public prosecutors’ office and maritime experts. Their mission is to uncover the details behind the mishap that has captured international attention.

According to the KCNA, detailed inspections revealed that, contrary to initial reports, there were no holes in the bottom of the warship. Instead, scratches were found on the starboard side, and seawater had entered the stern section through the rescue channel.

Experts estimate that it will take two to three days to stabilize the warship by pumping out the seawater from the flooded compartments and freeing the bow from the slipway. They anticipate an additional ten days to repair the damage to the ship’s side.

The Chongjin Shipyard, located in the northeastern part of the DPRK, is a critical facility for the nation’s naval capabilities. The swift response by the authorities underscores the importance placed on the vessel and the shipyard’s operations.

This incident comes amid the DPRK’s ongoing efforts to modernize its naval fleet. The outcome of the investigation may have implications for future shipbuilding projects and safety protocols within the country’s maritime industry.
