Malaysia’s PM: BRICS Unites Global South for Collective Power

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has highlighted the significance of BRICS as a unifying force within the Global South. BRICS, an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is a group of emerging economies working together to enhance cooperation and influence on global issues.

Speaking about international collaborations, Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that while ASEAN—a regional bloc that includes Southeast Asian nations—remains central and engages with all countries, BRICS offers a new avenue for countries with shared interests.

“BRICS represents a new initiative as a cohesive force within the Global South,” said Anwar Ibrahim. “We share many areas of common interests that require collective negotiation and protection. At the same time, we need to collaborate with others.”

His remarks underline the importance of solidarity among countries in the Global South to address common challenges like economic development, trade, and climate change. By participating in groups like BRICS, nations can enhance their negotiating power on the global stage and work towards mutual development goals.

Anwar Ibrahim’s comments reflect Malaysia’s approach to international relations—balancing regional commitments with broader global engagement. As ASEAN maintains its central role, Malaysia sees value in engaging with BRICS to further the interests of the Global South.
