Michek and Zhu-Chen Defy Desert Odds in Taklimakan Rally
The 2025 Taklimakan Rally’s fifth stage (SS5) saw competitors push their limits as they faced scorching heat and treacherous desert terrains over a grueling 287-kilometer course. Czech motorcyclist Martin Michek and the Chinese car duo of Zhu Guanghai and navigator Chen Qingkai emerged as the day’s standout performers, solidifying their positions at the top of their respective divisions.
The stage, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Taklimakan Desert, challenged racers with undulating dunes and sudden drop-offs that tested handling skills to the max. Soaring temperatures added to the intensity, while violent jolts on uneven terrain demanded endurance and resilience from all participants.
In the motorcycle division, Michek of the Chongqing Hoto Factory Team, who had been hampered by injuries earlier in the rally, made an impressive comeback. He dominated the stage, finishing with a commanding lead in 3 hours, 38 minutes, and 25 seconds.
Meanwhile, in the car category, the Duonai Shock Absorber Team’s Zhu Guanghai and navigator Chen Qingkai claimed the top spot with a time of 3 hours, 22 minutes, and 40 seconds. Their performance showcased exceptional teamwork and adaptability in the harsh desert environment.
The rally continues on Tuesday with SS6, a 288-kilometer route that spans wetlands, Gobi landscapes, and more desert terrain. This stage promises both breathtaking scenery and a true test of vehicle setup and driver skill as competitors navigate the diverse challenges ahead.
