World No. 2 Coco Gauff overcame serving struggles to secure a straight-sets victory over the Czech Republic’s Tereza Valentova, prevailing 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round of the French Open at Roland-Garros on Thursday. The second-seeded American faced challenges at the service line, having her serve broken five times during the match, including four times in the second set.
The 2023 US Open champion responded by breaking Valentova’s serve eight times to clinch the win. The 21-year-old Gauff will next face another Czech player, Marie Bouzkova, in the third round.
In the women’s doubles competition, Wang Xinyu and Zheng Saisai from the Chinese mainland pulled off an upset by defeating the 11th-seeded pair of Irina Khromacheva of Russia and Fanny Stollar of Hungary, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round.
Meanwhile, Zhang Shuai of the Chinese mainland and Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador, the second-seeded mixed doubles duo, began their campaign with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over French wildcard pair Julie Belgraver and Luca Sanchez in the first round.
