Twenty-six years ago, when chef Janjira Ananchaipattana left her hometown of Chiang Mai for Kunming, China’s “Spring City,” Thai cuisine was virtually unheard of there. Bringing the vibrant hot and sour flavors of Thailand to new palates was no easy feat, but Janjira was up for the challenge.
Today, she proudly owns six thriving restaurants in Kunming, a testament to how far Thai food has come in the hearts (and stomachs) of the local people. What was once considered a novelty has now become a beloved staple.
As the 50th anniversary of China-Thailand diplomatic relations approaches, Janjira felt compelled to do something special to express her gratitude to her loyal customers and friends. She hosted a “Friendship Long-table Banquet,” treating guests to authentic Thai dishes and unveiling a unique fusion creation of her own.
“Food brings people together,” Janjira said with a smile. “I wanted to celebrate the friendship between our countries and the wonderful community we’ve built here in Kunming.”
The banquet not only showcased the rich culinary traditions of Thailand but also symbolized the growing ties between the two nations. For many young people in Kunming, Thai food is now a part of their everyday life—a delicious reminder of the cultural exchange that continues to flourish.
