Tianzhou-9 Delivers Upgraded Spacesuits and Fitness Gear to China’s Space Station

Tianzhou-9 Carries Record-Breaking Cargo to Space

The Tianzhou-9 cargo spacecraft has set off on a groundbreaking mission to deliver supplies to China’s space station. Carrying approximately 6.5 tons of cargo—the largest payload since Tianzhou-6—the spacecraft is packed to the brim with essentials for the upcoming Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 astronaut crews.

What’s Inside the ‘Space Package’?

The supplies include crew provisions, materials for the space station platform, experimental samples, and equipment for space applications, aerospace medicine, and technology tests. “The cargo holds are fully packed, with some items even protruding,” noted Li Zhiyong from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

Upgraded Spacesuits for Extravehicular Activities

Among the new additions are two upgraded feitian extravehicular spacesuits, designated D and E. These suits feature improved durability, extending their service life from three years or 15 uses to four years or 20 uses. The upgrades are based on data from 21 extravehicular activities and extensive ground tests, establishing a comprehensive lifespan evaluation system.

Introducing the Core Muscle Exercise Device

To combat the effects of microgravity on astronauts’ bodies, Tianzhou-9 is also delivering a core muscle exercise device. This equipment, measuring 1.7 meters tall and weighing 130 kilograms, will be installed in the Wentian module. It uses gas resistance to simulate Earth-like conditions for exercises such as crunches, twists, and push-ups. “It strengthens deep muscles rarely trained in microgravity,” said Li Yinghui from the China Astronaut Research and Training Center. This device aims to support longer missions and prepare astronauts for future lunar surface operations.

Technical Upgrades Enhance Mission Efficiency

Tianzhou-9 boasts several technical upgrades that mark a significant step in China’s space logistics capabilities:

  • Three-Month Emergency Launch Capability: For the first time, China’s cargo spacecraft can be launched to the space station within three months in case of emergencies, enhancing operational resilience.
  • Three-Hour Rapid Rendezvous and Docking: Following the advancements of Tianzhou-7 and Tianzhou-8, the spacecraft adopts a three-hour fast docking mode, optimized from the initial two-day and later 6.5-hour processes. This saves fuel, shortens mission time, and ensures reliability through advanced autonomous control systems.
  • Real-Time Tracking: Tianzhou-9 uses a relay terminal to maintain real-time, two-way communication with ground control via relay satellites, providing full visibility of the delivery process—much like tracking a courier package.

These advancements highlight China’s growing expertise in space logistics and life support, laying a solid foundation for future deep space exploration.
