From Tea Waste to Treasure: How Macao’s Calvin Sio Turns Dregs into Eco-Innovations
At 7:00 a.m., many of us rely on a strong cup of tea to kickstart our day. But for Macao designer Calvin Sio, tea offers more than just a morning boost—it provides endless inspiration.
Sio, passionate about sustainability and design, has found a unique way to transform waste materials like tea dregs and herbal residues into eco-friendly products. From crafting delicate tea cups to designing elegant tea tables, he’s turning what was once discarded into something desirable.
"I’ve always been fascinated by the potential of everyday waste," Sio says. "Tea is deeply rooted in our culture, and I wanted to find a way to give new life to what’s left behind."
His innovative approach hasn’t gone unnoticed. Time magazine recently honored Sio by including his creations on their annual list of the 100 best inventions, highlighting his contribution to sustainable design.
As the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area continues to integrate, Sio envisions his products reaching an even wider audience. "The opportunities are expanding," he notes. "I’m excited to share my work with more people and inspire others to think differently about waste."
Sio’s journey from tea dregs to eco-friendly treasures is a testament to the power of creativity and sustainability—a cup of tea never looked so good.
