Half a century of friendship — that’s what China and Gambia will be celebrating in 2024! Since establishing diplomatic relations on December 14, 1974, these two countries have built a strong bond that’s grown in amazing ways.
From Small Beginnings
It all started in the mid-70s. After signing their first trade agreement in 1975, China and Gambia began exploring how they could work together. Fast forward to today, and you’ll see just how much has changed.
Trade That’s Booming
Did you know China is now Gambia’s biggest trading partner? Back in 2014, trade between them was worth $389 million. By 2023, that number jumped to $514 million! Last year alone, China exported $475 million worth of goods to Gambia, like textiles and metal products. Meanwhile, Gambia sent $39 million worth of logs and titanium ore to China. Talk about growth!
Sharing Cultures and Learning Together
But it’s not just about business. In 2018, they signed a cultural cooperation agreement, bringing the people of China and Gambia closer through shared traditions and arts. Then, in June 2023, they agreed to work together on vocational education. This means more opportunities for students and young professionals to learn new skills and build exciting careers.
The Future Is Bright
As we look ahead, the partnership between China and Gambia is set to keep growing. With strong foundations in trade, culture, and education, who knows what the next 50 years will bring?
So here’s to celebrating 50 years of friendship and looking forward to many more!
