China Expects 9 Billion Trips During Spring Festival Travel Rush

China Anticipates Record 9 Billion Trips for 2025 Spring Festival Rush

China is gearing up for a monumental travel season as it expects a staggering 9 billion inter-regional trips during the upcoming Spring Festival travel rush. This figure not only marks a 7% increase from the last peak season but is also poised to set a new record in the country’s travel history.

Known as “Chunyun,” the Spring Festival travel rush is an annual period when millions journey back to their hometowns for family reunions during the Lunar New Year celebrations. In 2025, Chunyun will run from January 14 to February 22, encompassing the most significant holiday period in China.

Transportation authorities anticipate record highs not just in overall trips but also in specific modes of travel. Cross-regional rail journeys are expected to reach 510 million, while civil aviation passenger trips could hit 90 million.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, eight government departments, including the Ministry of Transport, have released an action plan focusing on safety, operations, and service quality. A key component of this plan is enhancing charging services for new energy vehicles. Efforts are underway to open more charging facilities in busy service areas and guide drivers for orderly parking and charging during peak times.

The Spring Festival, set to fall on January 29 in 2025, is the most important traditional festival in China. As the nation’s transportation systems prepare for the massive influx of travelers, these measures aim to facilitate family reunions and uphold the festive spirit during this significant cultural event.
