China’s Box Office Hits Record 42.5 Billion Yuan in 2024

China’s box office revenue soared to over 42.5 billion yuan (approximately $5.91 billion) in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s rapidly growing film industry, according to the China Film Administration on Wednesday.

Domestic films played a pivotal role, contributing over 33.4 billion yuan and accounting for 78.68% of the total box office earnings. This strong performance highlights the rising popularity and quality of homegrown cinema in China.

A total of 79 movies surpassed the 100 million yuan mark in box office revenue, with 55 of them being domestic productions. This impressive figure underscores the audience’s enthusiasm for both local and international films.

In a bid to further expand the film industry, China added more than 4,600 new cinema screens in cities throughout 2024. This expansion brings the nationwide total to 90,968 screens, enhancing accessibility and offering more entertainment options to moviegoers.

Urban cinemas witnessed over 1 billion moviegoer visits last year, reflecting the sustained growth and resilience of China’s film market amidst global challenges.
