China’s First Energy Law Marks a Green Turning Point

On January 1, 2025, the Chinese mainland took a monumental step towards a sustainable future by enacting its first-ever energy law. This groundbreaking legislation aims to secure national energy security while propelling a green, low-carbon transition.

The new energy law comes at a pivotal time, aligning with significant breakthroughs achieved at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29). At the conference, global leaders agreed to triple climate finance pledges to developing nations and advanced critical carbon market mechanisms.

Experts believe that China’s move will have a profound impact on global climate action. Siddharth Chatterjee, the United Nations resident coordinator in China, highlighted the importance of this step. “China’s commitment to energy transformation sets a powerful example for the world,” he said. “It showcases how policy can drive change towards a greener economy.”

Daisy Shen, head of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) at KPMG China, emphasized the ripple effects on international cooperation. “China’s green transition is not just about reducing emissions domestically. It’s about influencing ESG practices worldwide and fostering collaboration on climate finance,” she explained.

The enactment of the energy law is expected to accelerate innovation in renewable energy technologies, promote sustainable development, and strengthen global efforts to combat climate change. For young people across the Global South, this marks a hopeful stride towards a cleaner, more sustainable planet.
