US President Donald Trump’s recent threats to impose steep tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico have raised concerns among global economists. According to Professor Xing Yuqing of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Trump’s approach could leave America isolated on the world stage.
“The US is the largest economy, and President Trump believes America has all the leverage to dictate terms to its trading partners,” Professor Xing said in an interview with CGTN. “By disregarding relationships with allies, he wants to make America alone in the world.”
Trump’s stance on trade has been marked by a series of tariff threats aimed at renegotiating existing agreements and reducing trade deficits. However, experts warn that such moves could strain alliances and disrupt global economic stability.
“Alienating allies like Canada and Mexico undermines long-standing partnerships and could lead to retaliatory measures,” Professor Xing added. “This could have unintended consequences not just for the US economy but for global trade as well.”
The international community is closely watching the developments, as the potential escalation of trade tensions may impact economies worldwide, particularly in developing countries that rely on stable global markets.
