US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods could lead Canada into a recession, according to David Gray, a professor of economics at the University of Ottawa. In an interview with CGTN, Gray warned that such a recession would not be in the interest of the United States and could also cause significant economic turmoil within the US.

“The tariffs imposed by the US are likely to push Canada into a recession,” Gray said. “This would create a fair degree of economic chaos in the US as well, which is not beneficial for either country.”

Gray emphasized the interconnectedness of the US and Canadian economies, noting that a downturn in Canada could have ripple effects across the border. He urged policymakers to consider the broader implications of trade policies that strain relations between the two neighboring nations.

The ongoing trade tensions have raised concerns among economists and businesses in both countries, who fear that escalating tariffs could harm industries and consumers. Gray’s comments reflect growing apprehension about the potential negative impacts of trade disputes on the North American economy.
