An economist has criticized former US President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, arguing that it demonstrates a lack of commitment to multilateralism. Professor Xing Yuqing, an economics professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan, shared his views on the implications of the policy for international trade.

“President Trump wants to ‘Make America Great Again,’ but his approach through the ‘America First’ policy essentially shows no sense of multilateralism,” Professor Xing stated.

He emphasized that trade between China and the United States is mutually beneficial. “If the US government is dissatisfied with the current state of bilateral trade, it should engage in negotiations with China, much like President Trump did during his first term, rather than imposing additional tariffs,” Professor Xing stressed.

The economist highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving trade disputes. He suggested that unilateral actions, such as imposing tariffs, could harm both economies and undermine global trade relations.
