Global South Must Rethink Globalization, Says Brazilian Scholar

Countries of the Global South need to reshape globalization to create a more economically and socially inclusive world order, according to Marcos Cordeiro Pires, a professor of international political economy at Sao Paulo State University.

In a recent interview with CGTN, Pires emphasized that in the face of American tariffs and trade policies, nations in Africa, Latin America, and Asia should collaborate to build a new model of globalization. This model would prioritize mutual development, social inclusion, and economic cooperation among developing countries.

“The current global order has not favored the Global South,” Pires said. “It’s time we take initiative to design a system that works for us and promotes equitable growth.”

He suggested that by strengthening regional partnerships and investing in sustainable development, the Global South can counterbalance the effects of protectionist policies from developed nations.

Pires also highlighted the importance of youth involvement in this transformation. “Young people are the driving force behind innovation and change. Their participation is crucial in redefining globalization to be more inclusive and fair,” he noted.

As the world faces economic uncertainties, the call for a reimagined globalization presents an opportunity for emerging economies to assert their influence on the global stage.
